This Workshop educates mental health professionals about transgender issues and illustrates ways for clinicians to more optimally evaluate and treat these youths. Three child psychiatrists with extensive experience working with transgender youth present in the Workshop, allowing for a practical and clinical presentation. The Workshop includes a variety of handouts, video examples, discussion of case vignettes, and audience participation. A basic overview of the development of gender identities and the formation of transgender identities is provided, including case illustrations of typical transsexual youth and varieties of transgenderism. Particular focus is given to established guidelines with therapeutic approaches and discussion of the controversies in minors. A variety of resources for youths and for clinicians are explored with the audience.
