Workshop I: Who's Sleeping in Your Bed?: Cultural Influences on Parental Style

Thursday, October 26
8:00 – 11:00 a.m. (ticket)
Diane Treadwell-Deering, M.D., Toi Blakley Harris, M.D., Alice R. Mao, M.D.

With the continued growth of ethnic populations in the United States, cultural competence for mental health providers is essential.
Developing an awareness of cultural differences in parenting styles and the appreciation of culture’s impact on assessment and treatment is particularly relevant for child and adolescent psychiatrists. Literature review of documented cultural differences and similarities of child-rearing practices in African-American, Asian-American, and Hispanic American families as compared to “traditional” western cultures are presented. Ways to incorporate the DSM IV-TR’s cultural formulation outline to enhance the engagement and maintenance phases of mental health treatment for these ethnic groups are examined. Attendees have the opportunity to apply cultural formulation principles and share ideas for clinical management.
