Clinical Practicum 2: School-Based Intervention for Autistic Spectrum Disordered Youth: Integrative Service Models from Preschool through the High School Years

Chair: Mark S. Chenven, M.D.

Tuesday, October 24
8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (ticket)
Each Clinical Practicum is limited to 30 AACAP/AMPI members.

Child and adolescent psychiatrists and other mental health professionals working with autistic spectrum disordered and developmentally delayed children and youth and their families must work in tandem with a wide array of service and funding agencies and therefore face exceptional demands in their efforts to obtain and integrate input from numerous sources to provide effective coordinated care. This practicum reviews and discusses three exceptional models of school-linked service interventions
for this population within the San Diego System of Care, with focus on diagnosis and treatment:
  • A toddler preschool research intervention program
  • A tertiary non-public school program
  • A private practice school consultation method
In addition to the core program faculty, this Clinical Practicum includes participation by family and community agency representatives to fully explore and address the practical challenges faced by all stakeholders in this service arena.

Clinical Practicum activities include site visits to Children’s Hospital, San Diego and Vista Hill Stein Education Center as well as multimedia and didactic presentations. The Clinical Practicum faculty discuss community practices and outcomes, from early childhood identification and treatment, through to school age delivery and care management.

The goals of this program are to familiarize participants with current eligibility, referral, assessment, intervention, treatment, and research practices in the three selected community service efforts for caring for autistic spectrum disorder diagnosed children and adolescents. The role of integrated care involving parents, schools, mental health providers, and other community resources are addressed. The challenges in developing, maintaining, and refining therapeutic interventions and in monitoring progressive change in developmental capacity of these youth are discussed. Participants are tasked with developing treatment care plans for various real and hypothetical case vignettes.
