53rd Annual Meeting Program Schedule
Clinical Practicum 1: Beyond the Pill: Social Context and Psychiatric Symptoms

Chair: Jeffrey Rowe, M.D.

Tuesday, October 24
8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (ticket)
Each Clinical Practicum is limited to 30 AACAP/AMPI members.

This Clinical Practicum experience has been developed to help us identify the profound effects of social context on children’s mental health symptoms. In particular, it focuses on the areas most of us tend to treat with medication: mood problems and aggression. The attendees visit two school settings, one designed to match the child’s learning methods with project-based learning tasks and the other where a social change model has been put in place to decrease student violence on campus. Both sites are regular education campuses that have undertaken the radical task of changing the social context. High Tech High has developed a model in which the academic demands, performance expectations, and social interactions between students and the interactions between a student and his/her teacher have been carefully structured in order to improve children’s ability to learn, feel confident, and feel capable. Naranca Elementary School has put a social change model called “Peacebuilders” in place in order for their students to feel safe, act in a peaceful and non-violent manner, and be able to manage conflicts and difficulties between students. Attendees can ask questions of the children, parents, and school staff about the programs, their effects, and their experience of using psychiatric medications before and now. These experiences add to the psychiatrists’ knowledge of how social context interventions can significantly alter their patients’ expressions of illness and improve their functioning.
