When children or adolescents have questions regarding their emerging sexual orientation, social and cultural overtones and taboos can lead a clinician to avoid these areas in the usual history taking. This breakfast: presents strategies for the ssessment of gay/lesbian/bisexual/questioning (GLBQ) adolescents; presents risk factors including suicide attempts, parasuicidal behavior, and substance abuse as potential warning signals; gives practical advice for the provider who does not have regular contact with GLBQ issues or patients; provides resource materials and information regarding agencies that provide support for GLBQ youth; gives suggestions for helping parents; and gives participants the opportunity to present their own clinical material.
