2008 Congressional Fellowship Program

The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) is pleased to announce the AACAP 2008 Congressional Fellowship Program. The AACAP Congressional Fellowship Program is designed to educate policy makers and Congressional staff about child and adolescent psychiatry and to foster awareness of children’s mental health issues. This experience will allow the Fellow to develop a keen understanding of how public policy affects patient care, education, and health insurance issues. The 2008 AACAP Congressional Fellow will be placed with a Congressional office or Committee where they will gain invaluable experience as they assist in the development of legislative and public policy initiatives

Qualifications:

Successful applicants must:

  • Be an AACAP member;
  • Be a PGY- 4 psychiatry resident or beyond;
  • Have completed training in or be scheduled to complete training in one of the below child and adolescent psychiatry programs:
    1. CAP training program
    2. Combined General Psychiatry/CAP Program
    3. Triple Board Program
  • Have a demonstrated interest in public policy issues; exhibit an interest in applying medical and scientific knowledge to the resolution of public policy issues; and
  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

Application:

All applications to the 2008 AACAP Congressional Fellowship Program must include the following:

  • Letter of Intent;
  • Curriculum vitae (CV);
  • Two letters of reference from professional colleagues or training director; and
  • Personal statement of no more than 1000 words describing the applicant’s interest in the fellowship, commitment to child and adolescent psychiatry, and future career goals.

Award:

  • $85,000 stipend;
  • Up to $3,000 in relocation or moving expenses; and
  • Health insurance for the length of the fellowship program.

Deadlines:

The application deadline is February 1, 2008. Notification of the award will be given in early April 2008. The Fellowship begins mid-August 2008 and concludes late July 2009.
