The Illinois Council of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (ICCAP) is a regional branch of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP). It is a not-for-profit organization of child psychiatrists that fosters clinical, academic, research, and policy-making efforts toward the prevention, identification, and treatment of juvenile mental disorders. ICCAP has about 250 members, all members of AACAP as well. ICCAP is supported by member dues, and accepts no sponsorship, food, or gifts from pharmaceutical companies.
AACAP Mission: The Mission of the AACAP is the promotion of mentally healthy children, adolescents and families through research, training, advocacy, prevention, comprehensive diagnosis and treatment, peer support and collaboration.
- Child and adolescent psychiatrists, unlike other physicians, are specifically trained to work with children, adolescents, and families affected by mental illnesses.
- Accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of a child or adolescent's mental illness requires a careful and detailed assessment.
- Children's mental illnesses are real and cause real suffering.
- Treatment works. Early intervention and sustained, quality treatment can lead to better outcomes.
