Mentoring Builds Careers
Steven P. Cuffe, M.D.
Welcome to the Summer 2007 Edition of the DevelopMentor. The DevelopMentor is a web-based newsletter of the AACAP devoted to informing medical students and general psychiatry residents about child psychiatry. We hope you find it interesting and informative. We also hope to answer your questions, connect you with a mentor, and help you explore the exciting field of child and adolescent psychiatry. The DevelopMentor web-page includes:
- Current articles by prominent child psychiatrists to help you learn about our medical specialty.
- A section answering frequently asked questions about becoming a child and adolescent psychiatrist.
- An archive of previous newsletters
- A mentor program to match medical students and general psychiatry residents with child psychiatrist mentors.
Future plans include the establishment of a bulletin board to ask questions of child and adolescent psychiatrists or AACAP staff.
I hope you enjoy the new articles we have posted. We have an update article on the SSRI and Suicide issue, a brief discussion of the economic and job choice benefits of child and adolescent psychiatry, more on mentoring, a re-publication of a column written by the AACAP Jerry Weiner Resident Representative to Council, a wonderful piece by a graduating child psychiatry resident, and finally, some news about the upcoming AACAP Annual meeting in Boston (October 23-28, 2007).
We want the DevelopMentor to be interesting and useful. Please give us feedback. Let us know how we can improve the newsletter. Most of all, we hope you will be better able to decide on a future career as a child and adolescent psychiatrist. You may reach me at spc45@scdmh.org. I look forward to working with you on the evolution of the web version of the DevelopMentor.
