Some children have medical illnesses made worse by emotional factors, or psychiatric illnesses made worse by medical factors. The Hasbro Children’s Partial Hospital Program has treated over 1,000 such children over the past nine years. The purpose of this Workshop is to prepare interested clinicians to develop such a program in their own community. The presenters discuss the manualized, family systems based, parent empowerment model for treatment that provides the philosophical and practical basis for the program. In addition, program development is discussed, including working with hospital administrations, setting fees, contracting with third party payors, relations with primary care and subspecialty providers in the community, and interactions with school systems. A significant portion of the Workshop focuses on participants’ individual concerns regarding obstacles to program development in their local community.
